http://www.anjabennis.com/china/      Trip to China by Anja Bennis

For most of August of 1999, I traveled to Beijing, China with the Hsing Chen School of Internal Martial Arts. The school is located in Costa Mesa, California. A Hsing Chen blackbelt teacher transplanted to Minnesota and started teaching. I am a kung fu student in Minnesota. I traveled with other students from California, other students from Minnesota, and the Hsing Chen Master teacher Shrfu John Bracy.  We visited our teachers, teachers. We got to see their schools,
take some lessons from them, and to spend time with them. A few students were officially lineages to the masters, or taken on as an official students.

My Adventures and Midadventures in Sweden by Rachel Frisk

When I was a child, I remember being told about my Swedish heritage. My great-grandparents on my father’s side all came from Sweden. I was given a coloring book about Dalarna horses, Maypoles, girls and boys in the Swedish national costume, and other cultural symbols. I was told and read stories about trolls and gnomes. This information was all the understanding I had abut what it means to be Swedish.  While I was in college, my brother became a resident of Sweden. I decided to take Swedish language classes. I studied the Vikings and the history of Sweden a little bit more. My education transformed by picture of Sweden. It was still a cold distant land, but the people were no longer ruthless barbarians, but quiet stoic people. My final semester in college, I was determined to travel to Sweden to finish up my senior projects in the Honors Program and in completion of my Anthropology BA degree. After being here in Sweden and meeting some of the people, once again my perspective has changed.

A European Education: Lessons from My Travels Abroad by Tammy Johnson

For my honors senior project, I reflected upon certain aspects of trips made to Europe in 1994, 1996, and 1999. Using memories and journals, I considered specific issues related to my trips, such as stereotypes/expectations that I took with me to Europe and how these have been proved/disproved, how the trips educated me about the human relations and the world, and so on. The final product was a paper based upon these reflections; it included specific references to journal entries and personal memories from these trips. --Tammy Johnson
