SIMMERL and HOTTUA (HOTTOIS) in FEULEN, LUXEMBOURG:

The Simmerl and Hottua families came from Oberfeulen and Niederfeulen, the two small villages that comprise Feulen, Luxembourg.  If you would like to see an aerial view of Niederfeulen, please go to Rol Schleich's web site, "Aerial Photographs of Luxembourg Villages," and click on "Feulen":  http://members.delphi.com/schleich/web/aerothumbs.html

NOTE:  The information below comes from various civil and church records for Feulen that I have studied over the past twenty years.

In checking LDS photocopies of Feulen, Luxembourg, records, I found the following information:

My great-great-great-great-grandfather, Pierre (Peter) Hottua, was the son of Michel Hottua and Catharine Petit.  He married Catharine Glasener, the daughter of Nicolas Glasener and Joanna Filtes (sp?).  [This information comes from the marriage record of Peter and Catharine Hottua.  Note: the Feulen parish records note that Peter Hottua died on 30 October 1831.]

My great-great-great-grandmother, Angela (Angelica) Hottua, born on 16 February 1808, was the daughter of Peter (Pierre) Hottua and Catharine Glasener.    Angela Hottua married Theodore Simmerl on 14 February 1827 in Feulen.   Angela Hottua Simmerl died on 15 July 1897. The St. Joseph Parish records list cause of death as "old age." She was buried in the parish cemetery in Granville, Iowa, on 17 July 1897.

In Francois Decker's history, Feulen, 963-1963, the surname HOTTUA (French spelling HOTTOIS) appears.  Monsieur Decker lists the following information on HOTTUA families:

1.  In the Schmidden House (#63) on Heiderscheiderstrasse in 1838 were living the following:

HOTTUA, Jean. Hausname "Schmidden," stammt aus Nr. 87a. Michael Hottois aus Oberpallen heir, vot 1769 M. Cath. Petit, Of. Petrus Hottois, geb. 2.12. 1779, heir. Cath. Glesener, Of. Nik. Hottua,
Of. heir. 14.2.1838 A. M. Marnach, Of. Dieses Ehepaar verzieht nach Nf.

[Elisabeth and Margaret's parents were Nikolaus Hottua and Maria Marnach, both born in
Oberfeulen. The two towns (Ober- and Niederfeulen) are a kilometer or so apart and are
generally known as "Feulen."]

2.  House #71 in Obermertzig (another nearby village) lists these residents in 1850:
Schloesser, Elis. 1775 Bissen, gest. 1847 Om. Wwe (Lambert Adam, 1773 Burscheid--1827
Om.); Hottua, Michel, Hufschmied, 1799 Nm., seinr Frau: Lambert, Christine, 1805 Om; die
Kinder, Elis. 1825, Jakob 1828, M. Elis. 1831, Theod. 1833, Heinr. 1835, Joh. 1841.
--Haus Schmatz. (p. 387)

[Living in this house of Elisabeth Schloesser--who was born in Bissen in 1775 and died in
Obermertzig in 1847 and whose spouse, Adam Lambert, was born in Bourscheid in 1773 and
died in Obermertzig in 1827--were Michel Hottua, his wife Christine Lambert, and their
children. The house was known as the "Schmatz House." Elizabeth Schloesser and Adam
Lambert were the parents of Christine Lambert, who married Michel Hottua. My surmise is
that Nikolaus and Michel Hottua were brothers.]

3.  Living in Niederfeulen in House #37 in 1850 were:

HOTTUA, Nik. Hufschmied, 1810 Oberfeulen, seine Frau: Marnach Maria, 1814 Oberfeulen; die Kinder: (all in Niederfeulen geboren): Elis. 1839, Sus. 1840, Sus. 1841, Nik. 1843, Theresia 1844, Marg. 1846, Peter 1847. Zwei Gesellen. --Das Haus Nr. 63.

[The information below on Theodore and Angela (Hottua) Simmerl and their children came from civil records copied by Feulen historian Francois Decker as well as from the Feulen parish records.]

Theodore Simmerl was born to Joseph Simmerl and Maria Gilson on 26 September 1797. He married Angela Hottua on 14 February 1827 in Feulen. He died in Feulen on 2 February 1855.   Their twelve children are as follows:

In August 1980, my cousin Frank Klein and I visited Feulen for the first time.  We met our present-day cousins, the Lindens, the Steiwers, the Bonests, and the Krieps.  The parish priest, who still had the original parish records, allowed Frank and me to study them.  Here are some of the records that I transcribed from the originals, which were in Latin:
