My Annual Report for the 1998-1999 academic year is below:
Goals 1, 2, and 3: I have taught English 275 during fall 98 and
spring 99 with special emphasis on doing research using WWW resources, especially those that would prove useful to future
teachers of literature. I have taught English 327 (fall) and 441/541 (spring) with emphasis on critical analysis of literature, literary
theory, and historical analysis. Students have done course presentations featuring the creation of web sites and teaching units;
the electronic academy's presentation carts have been used in our classes, so students have also learned how to work with those kinds
of communication technologies. I have developed and taught two Honors 450 topics courses: "Saints and Sinners" and "Mysteries of
Labyrinths," in which we have used presentation carts, done web site evaluation, and in which the 12 students are doing experiential
research projects and presentations. I have supervised a number of Honors senior projects and individual study projects
this academic year.
Goal 4: My primary advising work is with the approximately 150 Honors Program students at MSU. I'm their sole advisor. I have
developed Honors 201, "Introduction to Honors," and Honors 450,
"Senior Honors Capstone," which will be offered in fall 99. I also advise a few, though not many, English majors and graduate students
in English. On the whole, I have not taught graduate courses in
English this year and have worked only with one new graduate student this semester. I've served on seven thesis
committees in English, Women's Studies, Educational Leadership, etc.
Goal 5: I've published two critical articles in the past year, both in international journals published in Europe. I submitted a 600-page
book manuscript to the publisher (the book is under contract with U
Wisconsin Press for its "American Autobiography" series). Title: Diaries of Girls and Women: a Midwestern
American Sampler. I serve on the editorial boards of two professional journals:
a/b: Auto/biography Studies and Life Writing: An Electronic Journal and have reviewed 5-6 manuscripts of
scholarly articles. I have reviewed book manuscripts for several university presses (Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota Historical Society
Press). I have been awarded external grants from the Minnesota Humanities Commission and the Minnesota Historical Society. I have
presented at the Midwest Modern Language Association 1998 conference. I've read five students' memoirs and served as an unofficial
editor/mentor for their work. I am teaching as a volunteer in the MSU for Seniors Program this semester: the course is "Journaling and
Memoir," and 40 are enrolled. I am reading and editing these individuals' journal and memoir writing. I am a founding member of
The Labyrinth Society, organized at its first conference in St. Louis in November 1998, and I
plan to serve on the program committee for future International Labyrinth Society
Conferences.
Goal 6: I have presented a faculty development workshop and consulted with Women's Studies and History faculty at Winona State
University: areas included historical writing, memoir and
autobiography, the personal in faculty development, etc. For the past three years I have judged the annual nonfiction contest for the
Wisconsin Council of Writers. This year I chaired the English DEpt.
Personnel Committee and the TESL Search Committee. I chair the Honors Advisory Council and serve on the Women's Studies Program
Committee at MSU. Since 1990, I have hosted KMSU's "The Weekly
Reader," which features the writing of local, area and regional writers. The work of a number of our past and current MFA students,
as well as the writing of many MSU faculty members, has been featured on my program during the past
year.
Note: the report above was submitted to the English Department
Chair to be included in the departmental report for the year.
