On Reviews and Reviewers

After receiving both favorable and unfavorable reviews of my work, I never fail to be amazed at the degree to which reviewers say as much or more about themselves as they do about the work they review. And sometimes the portrait they offer is not very flattering.

I like the following primary guidelines for a review:

I think that these guidelines assure some attempt to appreciate what an author is trying to do, without sacrificing the opportunity to make warranted criticisms.
