Economic Base Analysis:  Cases for Study

  1. Presume you are a community in the Twin Cities area that to this point has been primarily a suburban bedroom community.  A development firm approaches you with a proposal to develop a major retail complex that will add 10% to the region’s activity.  What economic impact would you predict on your community?
  2. Suppose you are working for the Metropolitan Council, and a major biotechnology employer informs you that they plan to relocate to the Boston area.  What economic impact would you predict on the region?
  3. Suppose you are working for Minneapolis.  The new mayor has this hare-brained idea that, as the primate city in the region, the indirect effects of industries locating in the suburbs are as important to Minneapolis as the direct effects of industries that are attracted to the city.  Test this hypothesis.
