Course Goal:
This course is designed to explore the issues pertaining to women
managers. Through this inquiry, students will obtain a deeper
understanding of effective management tools and practices.
Course Objectives:
- Explore issues which are exclusive to women in management.
- Study the progress of women into management positions.
- Gain a greater awareness of the forces surrounding women managers.
- Identify tools that foster career advancement.
- Identify methods for effective management practices
Instructional Methodology and Teaching Strategies:
A variety of techniques will be used throughout the course including
group discussions, guest speakers student presentations, exercises
to promote self awareness and lecture. Class attendance is
strongly encouraged.
Required Course Assignments:
Readings: You are responsible for reading the text as assigned.
Class Exercises/Participation:
- Each student will keep a management journal, making on the
average three entries per week. Journal entries should be reflections
on newspaper or periodical articles, observations and experiences
relating to the topic of women in management. Each week students
will present their reflections to the class for discussion. The
journal will be turned in at the end of the quarter.
- Each student will provide a 5-7 page profile of a women manager.
The profile should include the women's background and credentials;
what she feels enhanced and what created barriers to her career;
what tradeoffs she has made if any; and what advice she would
offer other women pursuing a management career. In addition, students
should reflect on the profile. Students will present their profiles
to the class in a 15 minute presentation.
- Students are required to submit a career plan in which career
goals are identified and a plan for reaching the goals enumerated.
Obstacles should also be identified with strategies to overcome
them.
- Each student should come to class prepared to discuss the
assigned reading materials and actively participate in group discussion.
Final Exam:
There will be an essay style final exam.
