Sociology Areas
Sociology
is a very diverse discipline with a wide range of areas to
study. You may feel a little lost looking at the list of elective
courses to take. Some of you want to sample a wide range of courses,
while others may want a bit more direction. We have three possible
majors in Sociology: General, Applied, and Globalization. You can find
our bulletin here: http://sbs.mnsu.edu/soccorr/sociology/doc/sociology.pdf
For those that would like a bit more structure to their Sociology
program, I have listed a number of possible concentrations for your
major. We do not have formal concentrations, but the grouping of
courses below allow you to get a bit of clarity of the range of types
of courses we offer. You will notice that some of these concentrations
fit already existing majors such as Applied, Globalization, and
Corrections. You can either major in these areas, or complete the
General major with courses that fit a specific area.
By grouping courses in this way, you can also see ways to combine
different interest areas. You may be interested in inequality in
general, so courses from Gender, Ethnicity, and Inequality may be a
good fit. Some of you may want to study Applied aspects of Global
issues. Since prison populations are aging, you may want to focus on
Corrections and Life Course.
There are a wide range of ways to combine these areas or focus on one.
Hopefully, this list allows you to make a bit more sense out of what is
offered in the Sociology major.
