"Sigma Serves Children"
Philanthropy of Sigma Sigma Sigma

The Sigma Sigma Sigma Foundation focuses its philanthropic efforts around the theme "Sigma Serves Children," through the Robbie Page Memorial (RPM). The Robbie Page Memorial started in 1951 when our national president's son, Robbie Page, died of polio. His parents, Robertson and Mary Hastings Halloway Page, set up a memorial fund to help find a cure for polio. It was then that the Robbie Page Memorial became the national philanthropy of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. RPM supported and helped fund research to find a cure for the disease, which eventually lead to the discovery of the Salk vaccine.
After that purpose was fulfilled, Tri-Sigma looked in another direction to continue their philanthropy. They wanted to continue with the theme of "Sigma Serves Children" to sick children like little Robbie. Long range programming was developed and support play therapy for hospitalized children began at the North Carolina Memorial Hospital. By focusing on the emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children, funds raised by the collegiate and alumnae chapters of Sigma Sigma Sigma were used not only to establish playrooms, but to create a specialized field of study for professionals in child development and associated health care professions. Another national hospital that benefits from the donations of Tri-Sigma is the Children's Medical Center in Dallas, TX.
Our local focus supports the Immanuel St. Joseph in Mankato, MN and the Gillette Children's Hospital in the Twin Cities. Some of the past events to support hospitalized children include making puppets at our winter chapter retreat, making Pillows at our formal recruitment, and having fundraisers. Annually, our chapter has a holiday sisterhood with the Eta Theta chapter Sigma Sigma Sigma. We draw names and each sister will buy a children's gift that reminds her of the girl's name she drew. Each sister also buys a children's book. Then, we exchange gifts and donate the gifts to a local Toys 4 Tots and the book we donate to the hospitals. Spring of 2006 we had a taco feed where all of our proceeds went to the Robbie Page Memorial.

The third Friday of every month, Tri-Sigma does an event with the Girl Scouts of Mankato. For two hours, the third and fourth graders do a project with the sorority, such as making holiday crafts and cards, playing games, and just having fun!!!!
