Railroad Companies
United States and Canada
- Alaska Railroad Corporation has official information
about the Alaska Railroad, which the federal government sold to the
state in 1985.
- Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Home Page has official information about
BNSF, including information about the company, customer information and
services, news media information, and investor pages. Burlington's rail
network consists of more than 31,000 route miles covering 27 states and
two Canadian provinces. Revenues are generated primarily from the
transportation of coal, grain, intermodal containers and trailers,
chemicals, metals and minerals, forest products, automobiles, and
consumer goods.
- Canadian
National has official information on CN, including
company information, a system map, and shipment tracking. CN operates
approximately 17,000 route miles of track across Canada, and about 950
route miles of track in the United States. The network serves all four
of Canada's major ports: Halifax, Montreal, Prince Rupert, and
Vancouver, and includes a strategic connection to the important Chicago
gateway.
- Consolidated
Rail Corporation (CONRAIL) is the official source of
information on Conrail. It provides an introduction to Conrail and
its services, information on how to contact Conrail to arrange
transportation services, information for investors, news releases and
its employee newsletter, and details about its operations (facts, maps,
and photos).
- CP Rail
System is the official source of information on the CP Rail
System. CP Rail System's track stretches 10,000 miles from coast
to coast in Canada, and throughout the Midwestern and Northeastern
U.S. This site includes information about the CP Rail System, what's
new, fun facts, a photogallery, a section "just for kids," and a
"trains" section that has both a history of CP Rail and information on
new locomotives.
- CSX Corporation
Home Page has official information about CSX,
an international transportation company offering a variety
of rail, container-shipping, intermodal, trucking,
barging, contract logistics and related services worldwide.
- Guilford
Rail System is the official source of information on
Guilford Rail, which serves the Northeastern United States.
Available information includes Guilford Xpress,
a picture gallery, press releases, information on motions before
the Surface Transportation Board (STB), and an e-mail link.
- Kansas City
Southern Industries is the official site for information
about KCSI for shareowners, customers, and interested observers. KCSI
is a diversified transportation and holding company, and includes
the Kansas City Southern Railway, two mutual fund groups (the Janus
Funds and Berger Associates), and DST (a provider of automated record
keeping for the mutual fund industry).
- Norfolk
Southern Corporation Home Page has official information about
Norfolk Southern, a Virginia-based holding company that owns
a major freight railroad, Norfolk Southern Railway; a motor carrier,
North American Van Lines; and a natural resources
company, Pocahontas Land Corporation. The railroad system's
lines extend over more than 14,500 miles in 20
states, primarily in the Southeast and Midwest.
- RailAmerica Inc. is the official source of
information on RailAmerica, a short line railroad holding company.
RailAmerica acquires, develops, and operates short line railroads that
are formed primarily through the acquisition of light density rail
lines from larger railroads. At present, RailAmerica owns and operates
thirteen short line railroads with approximately 2,400 miles of track
in eight U.S. states and Chile.
- Union Pacific
Corporation Home Page is the official Web site for the Union
Pacific Corporation, a transportation, energy development, and
logistics company. UP has five operating companies: Union Pacific
Railroad, Overnite Transportation, Skyway Freight Systems, Union
Pacific Resources, and Union Pacific Technologies. This site provides
a profile of the company, a brief history, a map of operations, press
releases, financial reports, an analyst fact book, information about
the Union Pacific Railroad, Skyway Freight Systems, and UP
Technologies, and a corporate directory.
United Kingdom
- UK Railways
on the Net is a Web service providing information on
the UK railway industry, including freight, passenger, and
suppliers.
Australia
- National
Rail's Homepage is the official site for information on
National Rail, Australia's largest interstate freight railway.
- State Rail Authority of New South Wales is the
official source of information on State Rail, which runs commuter, long
distance passenger, and bulk freight services on a rail network covering
8890 kilometres through the most populous state in Australia.
Railroad Unions
- Brotherhood
of Locomotive Engineers is a labor organization representing
locomotive engineers and other rail employees. This site provides
information and news about the BLE, and provides links to services that
the BLE provides for its membership.
- Brotherhood
of Maintenance of Way Employees is a labor organization
representing the workers who build and maintain the tracks, bridges,
buildings, and other structures on the railroads of the United States
and Canada. This site provides information and news about the BMWE,
including press releases, a directory of officers, and Brotherhood
programs.
- LaborNet@IGC Home Page provides Web-based
communications, news, information, and resources for a democratic labor
movement. This site also provides links to a variety of labor
organizations.
- United Transportation
Union is the labor organization representing conductors,
brakemen, switchmen, yardmasters, and other rail employees. This site
provides UTU news (including news alerts), a directory of officers,
legislative issues, membership services, and a variety of other items.
General Industry Information
- Association of
American Railroads (AAR) is the official source of
information from AAR. Available information includes
press releases, statistics (including safety statistics), maps
of railroads in each state, and an update on labor negotiations.
For authorized railroad personnel, the site also includes information
on Interline Service Management (ISM), which helps railroads manage
inter-railroad shipments.
- The Bureau of
Transportation Statistics is part of the U.S. Department of
Transportation, and provides access to the National Transportation
Library and Geographic Information Services, as well as information on
BTS programs, products, and services. This site also features
searchable databases.
- Center for Industrial and Applied Mathematics - Scheduling and
Control Group performs research and consulting into the
efficient use of energy in transport related problems, including
the scheduling of trains on a rail network.
- Civil Engineering Site is a meeting point for
people interested in Civil Engineering. While the focus of this site
is general, it does feature a "Civil Engineering Resources List" that
includes links to universities, associations, research centers,
transportation, and railway sites.
- Council of
Logistics Management provides information on the
professional organization for individuals with an interest in
logistics management. Available information includes their mission,
services, publications, roundtables, a monthly spotlight, and
conventions.
- Delta
Nu Alpha Home Page has information on DNA, the national
transportation and logistics educational organization. This site
features information on membership, education, jobs, and industry
solutions.
- Federal Railroad Administration is the official
source of information from the FRA.
- FreightWorld is a freight transportation and
logistics site, with information on railroads, intermodal, airlines,
trucking, forwarders, logistics providers, maritime, package
express, moving and storage, finance and leasing, government, laws and
regulations, news and weather, organizations, services, software, and
suppliers.
- Northwestern
University Transportation Center provides information on
an education and research institution in the field of domestic and
international transportation and distribution. The Center features
graduate-level academic programs, executive programs, and research.
- National Academy of Railroad Sciences - Johnson County
Community College offers an AS Degree in Railroad Operations
that includes hands-on Conductor and Dispatcher training as a fourth
semester option. The placement rate is currently 100% out of both
programs.
- Northwestern University Transportation Library is
one of the largest transportation libraries in the world, with
information on transportation (air, rail, highway, water, pipeline),
law enforcement and police management, and environmental impact
assessment. The transportation collection emphasizes current
socioeconomic aspects, particularly management, operations, finance,
planning, regulation, and safety.
- Operation
Lifesaver is the official site for a nationwide, non-profit
public information program dedicated to reducing collisions, injuries,
and fatalities at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad
rights-of-way. Through a network of state coordinators in 49 states
(excluding Hawaii), Operation Lifesaver sends nearly 2,000 volunteers
into the field to deliver a highway-rail safety message.
- Princeton University Transportation Resources,
by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Program, has a variety of
information on transportation. The available information includes
highway, transit, and rail system information from around the world;
airport and airline information; colleges and universities with
transportation programs; private companies in the transportation
industry; government transportation agencies; directories of resources;
conferences and seminars; and a net-address book of transportation
professionals.
- The Railway
Industrial Clearance Association contains information
specific to the movement of various oversize commodities by rail. This
site features a complete list of all heavy duty railcars. In addition,
the site includes a Glossay of terms usually associated with rail high
wides, a membership list, and an outline and format for their Standards
program.
- Transportation
Law Journal is published by the College of Law at the
University of Denver. The Transportation Law Journal is a professional
publication in the field of transportation law. It addresses both
domestic and international developments of legal, regulatory, economic,
and political interest in all modes of transportation -- pipelines,
freight forwarders, brokers, and air, motor, rail, and water carriage.
- University of California at Berkeley - Institute of
Transportation Studies provides information on the Institute,
including publications, courses and conferences, resources, and a
calendar of seminars.
- U.S. Department of
Transportation Home Page has all the Internet based
services supported by the Department of Transportation.
- U.S. Railroad
Retirement Board is the official site for information on
the railroad retirement system.
- Yahoo! - Business and Economy: Companies:
Transportation: Trains and Railroads is the Yahoo
category for railroad companies, leasing, and related issues.
