TeX and LaTeX

If your need to express yourself in print has grown beyond the bug-ridden, proprietary, bloatware that you learned to use in junior high school, TeX and LaTeX are for you. They are small, fast, universal and very precise typesetting systems specifically designed to create technical documents. Here are links to help you find and install the software and learn to use it.

CTAN: The Comprehensive Tex Archive Network.
LyX: WYSIWYG for TeX (available for most operating systems...also for windoze).
WinShell -- small, nice front-end for LaTeX for windoze.
TeXnicCenter -- very nice, fully loaded ide for LaTeX for windoze.
    Beginner's book.
Ipe -- a nice epsf drawing tool.

Linux

Why would you use anything else (unless it's FreeBSD or IRIX)?

Ubuntu -- currently incredibly popular. Uses the GNOME desktop environment.
Kubuntu -- with the KDE desktop.
Debian -- also incredibly popular.
Flash Linux -- designed to fit on a 256MB flash drive.
DSL -- (Damn Small Linux), another tiny Linux.
Puppy Linux -- another tiny Linux, with a cute logo!
Slackware -- one of the oldest and best Linux distributions.

FreeBSD -- NOT Linux, but is compatible with most Linuxes.

There are many commercial versions available also...but you probably already have a commercially distributed operating system and you know what a rip-off that is.

Flash for x86 Linux -- newly released!
