Journal Essays

You must identify an article or published story about a grants administration & grantwriting that is related to the two topics assigned below. By “article,” I mean an article published in a refereed journal (you can find many of them on JSTOR) or an in-depth article published in a national newspaper (NY Times, Washington Post, Minneapolis StarTribune, St Paul Pioneer Press, etc.)—not just a news story, but a “feature article.” You will post to the D2L Discussion Board a minimum 250-word essay which identifies the article (give full citation using any standard format), briefly summarizes its content, and discusses the relevance/impact of the article to the topic for that week.  I will assess your essay based on the number of concepts from the reading which you apply to the situation described in the article, and the insight/appropriateness of the application you make.

The two assignments are:

1.      Now What:  Okay, you got the grant—now what do you do with it?  What does the published literature tell you about the process of “post-award” management of grants?

2.      Due Diligence:  Suppose you have gotten a lot of grants and you are invited to be on the review panel for awarding grants.  What are the duties and responsibilities of a grant reviewer? What are the standards of good practice?  What duties can you anticipate fulfilling?
