Community leadership cannot assume the concept of “leader-as-superior”

• Don’t confuse leadership with management
• Leadership lies in the authority & power of the followers
• Name for this is “authoritative action”

Role of education (from ex-ducere—to lead out) in creating leadership-for-followers

• What kind of knowledge?
• Practical wisdom (phronesis) rather than concept/theory (episteme) or skill/technique (techne)
• How is it taught?
• Feedback
• How is it systematically expedited?
• People choose leader to follow as they choose the good to pursue
• This implies moral discussion
• Leaders create the “social space” for action

Teaching leadership

• Power of community
• Learn by experimentation, not imitation
• Knowledge-in-practice
• Public work is space between places
