URBS 230 —Community Leadership and Service Learning
Institutional Analysis
This is an exercise in analytical writing.
By now you have been working with your service learning site for several weeks. Please describe the organization, and analyze the role it plays as a community institution. Besides the information you have picked up from observation and conversation, you might also look at the organization’s website and the annual report.
Your description should cover:
Who established the corporation (it might have been a group of people, or a single donor) and who is involved in it now.
When the corporation was established
Where the corporation is located, and whether it has moved over its lifetime
Why was the corporation established, and how has that changed over time
How is the corporation governed and staffed
What does the corporation do? What programs does it operate? What is its operating budget? Capital budget? What properties does it own?
You should analyze how (if at all) the organization serves the five locality-relevant functions defined by Roland Warren (Production-consumption-distribution, socialization, social control, social participation, mutual support).
This essay should be 4-6 pages in length.
