P.T. Pink Ladies
Preventing Teen Pregnancy in North Mankato
P.T. Pink Ladies (Preventing Teen Pregnancy in North Kato) Coach: Jennifer Estebo
December 2005
he P.T. pink ladies (Preventing Teen Pregnancy in North Kato) have been working zealously together to try to prevent teens from becoming pregnant in our community. The Dakota Meadows Middle School students working on this issue are eighth graders Abby, Andrea, Erin, Kate, Katie, Nicole, and Sarah and are coached by Jenny Estebo. We believe that preventing teen pregnancy is important because it affects many young women in the U.S. We have had many ideas about how we would like to speak out to the community about our issue, and we are progressing quickly to reach our goals. This week, we are planning to have a guest speaker talk with us about her first hand experiences with having a baby in her teen years and answer our questions so we are able to understand our issue better. We are also planning a twenty minute radio interview on MSU radio, where we will speak out about preventing teen pregnancy. We also have planned to make a 30 second public service announcement that will play on MSU radio, and would be sent to other radio stations as well. P.T. pink ladies are very enthusiastic about making a difference in our community by getting our message out there!!!
May 2005
During the past school year, P.T. Pink accomplished many things. One of our biggest achievements was organizing a book drive to collect children’s books to give to teen parents. When we interviewed a former teen mother, she suggested collecting books. Reading to young children is crucial to their development and helps succeed when they are old enough to attend school. We collected gently used children’s books at Dakato Meadows and donated them to the students at Central High School, an alternative school with many teen parents. The group took a field trip to Central High School to deliver the books and then we celebrated reaching our goal. This year P.T. Pink planned a radio interview on KMSU, made numerous phone calls, and filled out all the forms we need to reach our goals. P.T. Pink students also learned about citizenship, responsibility, democracy, how to work together as a team, and how to reach their goals. As you can see, we had a busy and successful year, and we also had a lot of fun in the process!
