Public Achievement is a part of my Democracy and Citizenship class. University students serve as citizenship coaches for small action teams of young students (age 12-14) at a local middle school. This collaboration between our university and the local school is an innovative attempt to put the study of democracy into action. The university students and middle school students are both empowered to engage in public work on issues of interest to them. This experience is required for Social Studies students preparing to be high school teachers. About 30 university and 180 middle school students are involved annually.
