REQUIREMENTS

In this class you will have the opportunity for two types of learning. Your will record, integrate and show your learning by doing some writing each week.

  1. Academic Content, coming from
    a. A lecture from one or both of the professors
    b. Weekly reading assignments which may be done after the class.
    c. A book you will read on your own.
  2. Travel Preparation
    a. Class discussions, presentations, videos etc.
    b. Reading from tour books.

1. Political History Papers

After each of the first six classes write a short paper on what you learned. Each week's paper should include an outline and a paragraph giving your reaction for the lecture, and the same for the reading.

Each paper should be typed, double spaced, 10 or 12 point font, with 1 inch margins.

2. Travel Journal Entries

Prepatory/Class Entries  (Write on six of possible seven classes)
After classes and before the next class write an entry on some things you learned in preparation for our tour. The focus should be on what you would like to see or do and why, what you would like to learn more about, things to do to make your trip go well, your expectations about experiencing a different culture etc. The journal should record learning from the tour-oriented, less academic readings (Knopf Guides), travel videos or discussions of travel in class, or your independent exploration such as websites. Students will share their journal each week with classmates who will verify the work. Each entry should be about 500 words, or one page if typed single-spaced.

Tour Entries   (Write on each of four half-day tours. )
For each of the four half-day tours  (indicated on the itinerary) write an entry of about 500 words on what you experienced and learned. Write a final entry summing up and concluding the journal.  These entries should definitely record learning from guided tours and group expeditions. This is not a personal diary of what you did socially, what you ate, bought etc. The journal is due to the professor by April 6.

The journal can be handwritten, A small portable format is recommended. Students will meet each week briefly in small groups to verify journal writing and to share insights, interests and observations.

3. Book Review  or Paper

Do some independent reading and writing.
Undergraduate students should read one book relevant to our study and tour and write a review.  The professor will recommend some books.  The review should include both a summary of the content and statements of your reactions and what you learned. If you review a fiction book evaluate its historical authenticity.

Graduate students should do some independent study to plan some focused attention on tour. Then write a paper relating  "Politics, Art and Architecture"  in either one of the cities we visit. Analyze the relationship between the three topics in general and by focusing on two  or three works of art and two or three architectural sites in one of the two cities. The Professor can offer some suggestions..

The papers/reviews should be typed and double-spaced, in 10 or 12 point font with 1 inch margins. They are idue by April 6.
